“We continue to be concerned about the security of refugees located in the South Sudan border areas. As you know fighting in southern areas of Sudan continues to drive thousands of refugees into neighbouring south Sudan. UNHCR is working now to move these refugees away from the border into safer areas of South Sudan because of really serious concerns about their security.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR):
“In Unity State we are receiving numbers of 60 to 200 refugees per day after fleeing Southern Kordofan state and they are still fleeing despite last weeks air strikes that hit Yida where 23,000 refugees are sheltering. Despite this insecurity we are continuing to provide services in Yida but we do believe that it is important to move these people away.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR):
“The assumption is that they are new however in many cases heavy rains and then the drying can turn up landmines so it is not exactly 100 percent clear however it is very disturbing. They are laid along the very roads that we would need to transport these thousands of refugees to the location that we have identified further south within the Unity state which we believe would be much safer.”

Heavy fighting in Sudan is driving thousands of refugees into neighbouring South Sudan.
At a press briefing today in Geneva, United Nations High Commissoner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Melissa Fleming told reporters that the agency was concerned about the security of refugees located in the South Sudan border areas.
Up to 200 refugees are arriving daily at Yida camp in Unity State, fleeing violence in Sudan's Southern Kordofan state.
Twenty three thousand people are sheltering in Yida camp, which was the target of air strikes last week.
Since August when the influx began UNHCR has been urging the residents of Yida camp to move to a site the agency has prepared further south in Unity State. But they are reluctant to move as they are worried about family members in Southern Kordofan state.
UNHCR says efforts to relocate these refugees are also being hampered by landmines found on the roads around the camp in Unity State.
