On the closing day of the Global South-South Development Expo 2011, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has won the South-South Cooperation Award for Leadership.
The award, made by Tariq Ali Al-Alsani, on behalf of Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, President of the Sixty-Sixth Session of the United Nations General Assembly, was received for FAO by Mr Abdul Kobakiwal, Chief of FAO’s Integrated Food Security Support Service.
The award recognizes the organization’s role in promoting the exchange of technical expertise and financial support in a growing trend towards cooperation among countries of the global South.
This year’s Global South-South Development Expo, hosted by FAO, put the spotlight on the global food insecurity situation and looked at examples of South-South cooperation to reduce hunger and poverty.
Organized by the UN Development Program’s (UNDP) Special Unit for South South Cooperation, the Expo has been an annual event since 2008, and is the first ever Expo solely from the South and for the South. It is a concrete response to the strong commitment made by the Secretary-General and the UNDP Administrator to help the global South realize its shared aspirations for achieving sustainable and equitable development through the sharing and transfer of SDSs, with the support of the donor community and the multilateral system under innovative triangular and public-private partnership (PPP) arrangements.
This year’s South-South Cooperation Award for Innovation, was presented to the solution “Solar Power for Irrigation in Mozambique” jointly funded by the FAO and UNIDO.
The South-South Cooperation Award for Partnership was won jointly by the ”Lao-Thai-Australia HIV Nutrition Programme” and the “Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves – Alliance”.
