“The crisis in Somalia and other countries in the horn of Africa dominate our report and account for nearly one third of the total amount. West and central Africa which includes the Sahel region, which is on the edge of a widespread nutritional disaster, comes in second, asking for over 311 million.”

“In the Sahel, we are facing a nutritional crisis of a larger magnitude than usual with over a million children at risk for severe, acute malnutrition. The funding needed for UNICEF in the initial phase over the next six months is of 67 million dollars. The crisis is affecting communities across Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger and the Northern region of Cameroon Nigeria and Senegal.”

“Throughout the world, million of children are living amidst crisis that persists for years. While some of these emergencies attract significant media and political attention, others never got such attention and many become silent emergencies in which deep humanitarian need existing far from the public eye is too easily and quickly overlooked. Silent emergencies do not make headlines but, ladies and gentlemen, they should. Millions of children are living them as I speak amidst violence, continuous displacement and intermittent access to food, water and other basic services.”

“The political problems have to be solved and that is why we are working also with others and particularly with the UN secretariat, also to solve the political problems. Because the political problems and what is occurring in the countries have an impact also on children and if the political problems are not solved, if for example, conflict is not solved, we will have problems."

UNICEF on Friday launched an appeal for (USD) $1.28 billion this year, saying that a third of the money was needed to help children in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa. The UN children’s fund said UNICEF expects to help about 97 million people in 25 countries and territories in 2012.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Rima Salah, UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director warned of the silent emergencies in which humanitarian crises far from the public eye are quickly overlooked.
She said, “silent emergencies do not make headlines but, millions of children are living them as I speak amidst violence, continuous displacement and intermittent access to food, water and other basic services."
The East Africa and Southern Africa regions show the largest increase in funding needs, mainly to the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa. The second highest funding priority is for assistance to the Democratic Republic of Congo, representing eleven percent of the total, while the amount sought for Sudan makes up eight percent, with Pakistan at seven percent.
