3. SOUNDBITE (English) Marixie Mercado, Spokesperson, UNICEF:
“Nearly eleven months of violence in Syria have led to the deaths and injuries of hundreds of children. There are reports of children being arbitrarily arrested, tortured and sexually abused while in detention. Over the past few days, reported heavy shelling by government forces of civilian neighbourhoods in the city of Homs is undoubtedly causing further suffering for more children. ‘This must stop. Even one child killed in the violence is one child too many,’ said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. ‘We urge the Syrian authorities to allow help to all those who need it desperately.’ UNICEF does not have access to the affected areas of Homs and cannot confirm the impact of the attacks there, but there are credible reports, including from international media inside Homs, that children are caught in the violence. Those injured must be given immediate and unconditional access to specialized medical care.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Marixie Mercado, Spokesperson, UNICEF:
“The latest numbers that are available through the local human rights organizations working in Syria on children dead and in detention are over 400 dead and also 400 in detention as at the end of January.”

Storyline

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said today that nearly eleven months of violence in Syria have led to the deaths of at least 400 children.

UNICEF spokeswoman Marixie Mercado told reporters in Geneva that “as of the end of January, 400 children are dead and more than 400 have been detained."

Mercado also said the figures for children killed came from Syrian human rights groups working in Syria. She added that, “there are reports of children arbitrarily arrested, tortured and sexually abused while in detention."

UNICEF said heavy shelling of civilian neighbourhoods in the city of Homs “was undoubtedly causing further suffering for more children." Mercado said that in a statement, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake called for the violence to stop. "Even one child killed in the violence is one child too many," he said, adding that he urged the Syrian authorities “to allow help to all those who need it desperately."
