“Instead of being accused for the events in our civil war I should have been rewarded for all the good things that I’ve done, namely that I did everything in human power to avoid the war, that I succeeded in reducing the suffering of all civilians. That the number of victims in our war was three to four times less than the numbers reported in the public.”

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic began his war crimes trial defence today (16 October) claiming he is a “mild man, a tolerant man with great capacity to understand others".
He told the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the Hague, that he should be ”rewarded” for reducing suffering during the 1991-1995 ethnic war in the former Yugoslavia.
He faces ten counts of war crimes including genocide. He is specifically charged with masterminding the massacre of more than 7,000 men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995.
He said he had done "everything within human power to avoid the war and to reduce the human suffering" , by among other actions stopping the Bosnian Serb army “many times” when it had been close to victory.
He said he had tried to arrange peace agreements, applied humanitarian measures and honoured international law.
Karadzic, a former President of Republika Srpska, was arrested in Belgrade in 2008 after almost 13 years on the run. His trial began in 2009.
