Storyline

Actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom met up with children and young people near Cape Town this weekend, with the goal of learning more about their lives and sharing a good time with them

Bloom joined the children in what is called a Safe Park, a place where children and youth can go for supervised, engaged playing. Safe Park is an initiative of the UNICEF supported programme, Isibindi.

Isibindi provides community-led assistance for orphans and children at risk of abuse, neglect or dropping out of school.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nozuko Ngalase, Child Care Worker:
“As the childcare workers, we are there to help the children, in their needs. We are working in the life space of the children. Giving them more support and having a good relationship with them.”

Bloom visited families who receive assistance from Isibindi, discussing the challenges they face, and the kind of support they receive.

16 year-old Prince looks after his three siblings. His mother passed away 11 months ago and his father works long hours and cannot look after the children. Nozuko is their child-care worker.

SOUNDBITE (English) Prince, 16 Year-old:
“She’s the one who understands us and looks after us. She comes and looks after us. She comes at 7 in the morning to see if things are going right.”

Bloom also met with young reporters from the Youth Reporters Network, a collaboration between Atlantis Community Radio, the Children’s Radio Foundation, UNICEF, and the South African Department of Basic Education.

The youth and the actor discussed issues facing young people in their community, in particular, gang violence and sexual exploitation.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nazeema Sauer, 19 Year-old Youth Reporter:
“I’ve realized that people can put a smile on their faces and just act like everything is ok, but when you go up to them and you speak to them face to face, you get the real facts and the real story – and everyone has a real story – it can he a nice story, it can either make you sad or it can make you happy. And a lot of the stories that people have told me, the interviews, the audio profiles that I’ve done with them personally, it has inspired me.”

Bloom himself expressed his own inspiration in seeing how the youth work to raise awareness on difficult issues, and the need to address these issues.

SOUNDBITE (English) Orlando Bloom, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador:
“The idea that there is a young girl, in a town 60 miles from here with a disability who is being sexually abused, or taken advantage of – or that there are young kids just around the corner and are getting in and out of taxis, and are taking rides and who are thinking that sexual favors for a ride in a taxi is OK, is preposterous to me, and hard to fathom, and something that is something that we are all aware of and need to open out hearts and minds to.”

The young reporters brought the actor into the studio for an interview in preparation for their next show. Each reporter took turns asking him questions about his life as a celebrity.

SOUNDBITE (English) Orlando Bloom, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador:
“That is definitely the best interview I have ever done.”

Orlando Bloom became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2009, and has spoken out about children’s rights for many years.
