Storyline

Famed sitar player Ravi Shankar passed away Tuesday (11 December) in California after undergoing valve replacement surgery last week, according to news reports.

Shankar is credited with popularizing sitar music in the West, having performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and being associated with artists such as George Harrison of the Beatles.

Forty-five years ago nearly to the day, Shankar marked Human Rights Day (10 December) in 1967 with a concert alongside violinist Yehudi Menuhin at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shankar was 92 years-old and he is survived by his two daughters, Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones, who are also celebrated musicians.
