Storyline

They fled their homes for the fear of their lives. Months after Mali plunged into chaos. Refugees are still arriving at this camp.

SOUNDBITE (Tamashek) Rakia Akhamdou, Malian refugee:
“After the bombing of Konna, there were a lot of armed men who stormed Kidal. The Islamist movement really frightened us.”

With the horrors of the conflict still fresh in their minds, they say for now there is no going back.

SOUNDBITE (Tamashek) Fatima Wallet Abdou:
“I had to leave because I was afraid to be assaulted and I was afraid for my children too. Now, after what I have seen, I cannot imagine going back.”

50,000 people are seeking refuge here in Niger, one of the poorest countries of the world
Away from the violence, they face a different kind of enemy. Hunger is paralyzing hundreds of refugees.

Last year, the malnutrition rates amongst children under five were higher than emergency levels.

For the past 3 months, UNICEF, The World Bank and UNHCR have been feeding nearly 1,200 children at the camp.

SOUNDBITE (French) Diallo Mahamadou Mariatou, Social Worker at Islamic Relief:
“For each child, we have three meals in the day. We use Premix. We cook it for every child. Premix is a food that helps the child screened as malnourished to help him to go ahead, to give him what he didn’t get.”

The food aid that trickles through is helping, but there is still very little to keep them going in this heat.

Their horizons as empty and desolate as the desert surrounding them.
