Storyline

During the recent instability in Mali, the city of Mopti became a safe haven for thousands of displaced.

UNHCR and its partner ‘Inter-SOS’ set up supply points like this one. This was their fifteenth distribution in this area since November last year.

Khadija Traore is a married mother of two who fled Timbuktu five months ago, because of the presence of the rebels. Ticket in hand she waits her turn.

SOUNDBITE (French) Khadija Traore, displaced Malian:
“I have been here since nine this morning, but so far nothing. I am waiting.
That’s why I am here today.”

Many have come today. The supplies being handed out are basic. Everyone gets a plastic jerrican that holds 10 litres and a tarp.

This distribution will go on for two days and bring assistance to over 200 people and their families.

SOUNDBITE (French) Baba Coilibaly, logistician InterSOS:
“ We are beginning the distribution. It is going well. We started at 09:30 and people are arriving. The committee is there to manage the list and things are going well.”

Khadjija called lists are prepared of those who can eligible for assistance.

Thousands of Malians were displaced within Mali during the course of the conflict.

Most are still waiting for security to prevail across the region to go home…..

SOUNDBITE (French) Khadjija Traore, displaced Malian:
“I want to go home to Timbuktu. That's what I really want.”

The displaced are eager to return home but reports of unrest and revenge attacks against some communities are dissuading them at least for now.

Still there, is an optimism that it will happen.
