“Today we decided to do like a big day for the children where they can come and do some entertaining activities. We asked the children to send a message to the world by making a drawing. Each one is expressing herself in a different way. Many of the children either drew a sun with like nice flowers or they are drawing their flag. So apparently they are thinking of their home or at the same time looking at the future.”

“Many of these children have been through so much. They have undergone extreme stress. They have left their homes they have left sometimes their family members behind. A lot of them have not been to school for the past 20-months. This is really the return to normalcy, the beginning of hope that there is a future for these children.”

It’s back to school time for thousands of Syrian children at Za’atari refugee camp in northern Jordan. After a one-month winter break classes are full again bringing some degree of normality to the lives of children among the camps 70,000 population.

To mark the start of school term, a delegation from the European Union, one of the school’s largest funders, have come to visit.

To meet the needs of the camp’s increasing population, with over 1,000 people arriving every day, a new school is currently being constructed. On completion the facilities will provide education to several thousand more children.
