Storyline

Almost two years to the day of the start of the Syrian crisis, the one million refugees mark has been reached.

Across the region, thousands of Syrians have gone into neighbouring countries.

In Jordan there are 43 small border points like this one. From here, people go to Za'atri refugee camp or to the country's cities and towns.

In Lebanon, the refugees live in communities, in rented houses, whatever they can find.

In Turkey, the government has built 17 camp.

From Iraq to Egypt to Europe, the numbers have grown.

SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
"Today, we have registered one million Syrian refugees in the countries around. And this represents a massive displacement. And this is the proof of the level of destruction and suffering that we are witnessing in Syria today."

Most arrive with few possessions. Many have lost family members.

Around half of the refugees are children, the majority under the age of eleven.

The impact of large numbers of refugees arriving in neighbouring countries is severe.

SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
"One can imagine in the most sensitive region in the world what impact the Syrian crisis has and if we want to avoid an explosion in the Middle East, if we want to guarantee the peace and the stability in the countries around, it is very important to find a political solution for the Syrian crisis before things gets much worse than what they are now."

Lebanon's population has increased by as much as ten per cent.

Jordan's energy, water, health, and education services are being strained to the limit.

Turkey has spent over six hundred million dollars setting up their camps, with more under construction.

Funding is crucial to the international community's ability to continue providing assistance.

SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
"Without massive support from the international community, it will be impossible to respond to this dramatic humanitarian situation in Syria and around Syria."

Humanitarian organizations had predicted reaching the one million refugees mark mid-year.

But the reality on the ground in Syria has pushed that number faster.

And as the conflict escalates, the numbers will only grow.
