Storyline

Tua Thang boarding school is high in the mountains of Dien Bien province in northern Vietnam.

Giang Thi Me is one of the more than 300 students, all of which belong to the Mong ethnic minority.

She’s learning to read and write in Vietnamese, which is not her mother tongue.

These children are just a few of the thousands ethnic minority children in the region who are receiving UNICEF support, which protects them and ensures that they get a quality education.

School life is a balance of work and fun. The students have plenty of time for play and to tend their school garden. This school is a safe space where children can flourish.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mitsue Uemura, UNICEF Education Chief
“Many ethnic minority children come from very poor families and do not even have access to education, health care, good nutrition, and water and sanitation. Often times they are also neglected, abused or forced into child labour and early marriage.”

On Saturday Me and her friends walk six kilometres on a rough road to visit her family.

Over a simple lunch, the family gets caught up on the events of the week.

Me’s parents are happy to see that their daughter is thriving.

SOUNDBITE (Mong) Giang A Phong, Me’s Father
“I really hope Me will continue her studies so that she can become a teacher.”
The movement towards quality education is reflected at the national level. The Vietnamese government has introduced a policy which supports children in weekly boarding schools. That includes providing meals and accommodation and a small allowance for education, entertainment and sports.

It’s making a difference in thousands of lives like Me’s.

“I like going to school very much.”
