3. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon United Nations, Secretary-General:
“We have to confront the hard truth that our planet is under threat. Climate change is a real and growing problem. Unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, often driven by greed, is eroding our planet’s fragile ecosystems. We are losing biodiversity as more and more species disappear. Short-sighted commercial fishing practices are depleting fish stocks. Acidity in the oceans is threatening the whole marine food chain. When we threaten the planet, we undermine our only home and our future survival. Fortunately, millions of people around the world recognize this problem. They are part of a growing movement for sustainable development. More and more governments are hearing their calls for action.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Vuk Jeremić , President of the General Assembly:
“As we consume our natural resources at an increasingly faster rate than we can replenish them, we have unwittingly become a massive experiment with the planet’s ability to support our continued existence. It has now become a widely accepted public policy paradigm that humanity’s future material advancement must be consistent with the tenets of sustainable development.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Luis Arce, Minister of Economy and Public Finance of the Plurinational State of Bolivia:
“That is capitalism, a system in which not all of us fit in, a system which there will always be a few winners and many losers, including mother earth. We are facing a profound ideological, ethic and moral crisis. We are facing the degradation of the capitalist society and not only are we endangering the only home we have, but also life itself on the planet.”

Storyline

Top United Nations officials today (22 April) commemorated Mother Earth Day, voicing alarm at the degradation of the planet resources.

Speaking to a General Assembly interactive dialogue on Harmony with Nature, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said “we have to confront the hard truth that our planet is under threat.”

Ban stressed that climate change “is a real and growing problem” and said that “unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, often driven by greed, is eroding our planet’s fragile ecosystems.”

The Secretary-General remarked that “when we threaten the planet, we undermine our only home and our future survival.

He noted that millions of people around the world recognize this problem and they are part of “a growing movement for sustainable development.”
General Assembly President Vuk Jeremić said “we have unwittingly become a massive experiment with the planet’s ability to support our continued existence” and pointed out that it has now become “a widely accepted public policy paradigm that humanity’s future material advancement must be consistent with the tenets of sustainable development.”

Bolivia’s Minister of Economy and Public Finance, Luis Arce, told the meeting that capitalism, “a system in which not all of us fit in,” was to blame for much of the problem.

Arce said the world is facing “a profound ideological, ethic and moral crisis” and not only are we endangering “the only home we have, but also life itself on the planet.”

The General Assembly declared 22 April as International Mother Earth Day in 2009 to promote harmony with nature and the Earth in order to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity.
