“As the situation inside Syria continues to deteriorate, it is even more vital that everyone collectively work towards preserving regional stability. Advancing the Middle East Peace Process remains central to ensuring that the region is not at a further risk of destabilization.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeffrey D. Feltman, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs:
“Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas have repeated the right commitments. The choice ultimately rests in their hands not to disappoint their people and to offer them, at last, real prospects for peace and security. The international community also bears a unique responsibility to help them in moving forward. The United Nations welcomes the renewed attention the United States is giving the peace process.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations:
“Urgent action is needed to salvage the prospects for achieving a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the longstanding parameters that are well-known to everyone in this Chamber, parameters that form the foundation of the two-State solution and the essence of an historic compromise, which the Palestinian leadership has committed itself to and the international community widely supports.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ron Prosor, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“We know peace comes at a price. We want peace, but not at any cost. We will not turn a blind eye in the face of the threats that surround us. Now is the time to put aside the distracting sideshows of this debate and focus on how we can lay the foundation for genuine, genuine lasting peace. It is naïve to think that that peace can come from grand statements and vague promises. It would be like trying to build a new house on a shaky foundation.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Susan Rice, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations:
“We urge leaders to avoid provocations that complicate the resumption of peace negotiations and Israeli-Palestinian cooperation. Progress towards peace is urgently needed, not only for Israelis and Palestinians, but across the region and the world. This goal remains at the core of our efforts.”

The United Nations top political affairs official told the Security Council today (24 April) that as the situation inside Syria continues to deteriorate, it was vital to preserve regional stability and said that “advancing the Middle East Peace Process remains central to ensuring that the region is not at a further risk of destabilization.”
The Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey D. Feltman, pointed out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas “have repeated the right commitments” and said that “the choice ultimately rests in their hands not to disappoint their people and to offer them, at last, real prospects for peace and security.”
The international community, he added “also bears a unique responsibility to help them in moving forward.”
Feltman welcomed “the renewed attention the United States is giving the peace process.”
Also addressing the Council, Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour, stressed that “urgent action” was needed to salvage the prospects for achieving a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Mansour said the parameters for negotiations for the two-State solution are well established and are “the essence of an historic compromise, which the Palestinian leadership has committed itself to and the international community widely supports.”
For his part, Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor, said that his country United Nations wants peace, “but not at any cost.”
The debate, he said, should focus on laying the foundation for lasting peace and added that it would be “naïve to think that that peace can come from grand statements and vague promises.”
He said that this would be like “trying to build a new house on a shaky foundation.”
US ambassador Susan Rice, in her address to the Council, urged leaders “to avoid provocations that complicate the resumption of peace negotiations and Israeli-Palestinian cooperation.”
She said progress towards peace was urgently needed, not only for Israelis and Palestinians, but across the region and the world.”
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon earlier this month met with President Barack Obama in Washington and discussed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as well as the situation in Syria. Ban welcomed the momentum generated by President Obama’s recent visit to the region.
