Iraqis voted last Saturday (20 April 2013) in the country's first elections since the withdrawal of US troops; a key test for the Iraqi security forces.
Electors from 12 governorates (out of 18) went to the polling stations under tight security arrangements.
Before the vote, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Martin Kobler, emphasized the importance of the active participation of all eligible Iraqis for the success of the poll.
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced that 51 percent of the 13.5 million registered voters cast their ballots in the elections; the figure includes also the votes of police and military who voted separately on 13 April 2013.
The UN Iraq congratulated the Iraqi citizens on the peaceful conduct of the Provincial Council elections and commended the work of the IHEC for its high level of professionalism. The UN also praised the efforts of the Iraqi Security Forces who provided a peaceful environment for the elections.
265 political entities had been certified by IHEC to participate in the elections. Nomination papers were submitted for a total of 8,302 candidates, of which 2,205 (26 percent) were women.
The counting of votes has now started and IHEC should announce the result later in April.
