Storyline

The government of South Sudan today (6 May) strongly condemned the killing of a top tribal chief and an Ethiopian Peacekeeper in Abyei region on Saturday (May 4).

The government deeply regretted the killing by a Misseriya assailant on a United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) convoy in the Abyei Area.

Two other peacekeepers were seriously wounded in the incident which seems to have pitted Ngok Dinka farmers against ethnic Misseriya pastoralist tribesmen. The groups have repeatedly clashed in the past, particularly in the area between Sudan and South Sudan which lacks clearly demarcated borders.

Addressing journalists at a press conference earlier today South Sudan’s Minister of information, Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the government “strongly condemns this cowardly act.”

The South Sudan government is calling on the United Nations and the African Union to search for the perpetrators behind the attack in Abyei.

Marial described Saturday’s attack as a “war crime.”

He said the government was asking the United Nations, “especially the Security Council and the African Union because they are the one responsible for Abyei, to indeed investigate this unprovoked killing of the innocent and bring the culprit to book. This act of course it amounts to the war crime.”

The government extended its condolences to the people of Abyei, United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
