Storyline

Continuing their visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this morning Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon and Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank visited Goma in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In Goma, Ban and Kim visited the Heal Africa hospital that treats victims of sexual violence.

Talking to reporters later after their visit to the hospital Ban Ki moon expressed his frustration, "I am very angry that women and girls have to endure such barbarity, here and anywhere. This must stop.” The World Bank President also talking about his visit to patients at the hospital said that it was “a very bracing moment for me.” He continued that “what it taught me is that, in addition to bringing about peace and security, in addition to trying to bring development, we have to think about long-term real justice for these women."

Talking about the development of the country Ban noted that the World Bank as well as the UN were determined to support the peace and development that would benefit the people of the DRC and the Great Lakes region and Kim added that the World bank was investing in hydroelectric power, ensuring access to energy. And when it came to trade, Kim said that “We're focusing on trade. One of the most difficult issues is that there are things to be traded and sold across borders, but the barriers to trade are very high in this region, and it shouldn't be."

Ban took a moment to urge leaders “to work together to realize the potential of your moment, which is aimed at realizing the full potential of the people here."

Kim added that "what the two organizations were doing was “something truly unique, in the sense that, while the peace framework is still in the early stages, while the Intervention Brigade are not quite right here, we're moving in aggressively and saying, more money needs to go into development, so that people have jobs, healthcare, access to education, and hope - in hopes that that would decrease the likelihood of continuing conflict."
