12. SOUNDBITE (English) Fartun Abdisalaan Adan Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre Director:
“This meeting is very important for us, because we have a channel we can go through, because if you are on the grass root level working as NGOs it’s very difficult to reach the government and the U.N. So having someone like the Ambassador, we can have the access to come and to talk to him and he can help us and to talk to the other people. So I think its very important to have this kind of meeting, you can see how many women just talking what they need, just to listen they need someone to listen. This country, we are the majority and we act like a minority.”

The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay today (7 June) listened to prominent Somali women activists about their experiences and the challenges they face in protecting human rights, promoting women’s political participation and addressing sexual and gender based violence.
SRSG Kay said “from today's meeting I learned at least that there is a very vibrant, very active network of strong women activists here in Mogadishu which is great. I have learnt also, real concern still about the political stability and security in the country and a determination not to return to the civil war of the last decade a very strong will to see peace in the country and also very strong support to their Government and the wish that the international community and the U.N support fully the federal Government here.”
On his part the SRSG gave an explanation of UNSOM's mandate and the role UNSOM will play in improving access to justice for women and girls, particularly in relation to gender based violence, supporting women’s leadership, political participation and the importance of ensuring coordination of Government efforts with development partners to support women’s rights.
SRSG Kay further said that UNSOM will have a component of at least 40 experts from across the world who will work alongside Somali groups to help protect and promote the fundamental rights of all Somali women as the country recovers from nearly two decades of conflict.
