“The fundamental reason of the instability on the Korean Peninsula is because the Korean armistice agreement has been nullified by the United States, therefore a pressing task for the Korean Peninsula today is how to prevent war and guarantee peace. The Government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, DPRK, from its peace-loving policy has proposed to conclude a peace treaty which could replace current armistice agreement and strive tirelessly in order to end the current unstable cease-fire status.”

“After all, it is the United States military exercises which is causing the tension and troubles on the Korean Peninsula and the region. “The denuclearization should not be unilateral, it should not be confined only the Korean Peninsula on the northern part, my country exactly, I say. Ambassador Sin Son Ho of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) said today (21 June) that “the fundamental reason of the instability on the Korean Peninsula is because the Korean armistice agreement has been nullified by the United States.”
Sin said the Government of the DPRK, “from its peace-loving policy has proposed to conclude a peace treaty which could replace current armistice agreement and strive tirelessly in order to end the current unstable cease-fire status.”
The 1953 armistice ended the Korean War with a peace treaty, which was never finalized. The DPRK representative also called for the dissolution of the US-led UN Command in South Korea.
He said the United States military exercises in the Peninsula are the cause of “the tension and troubles” in the region.
He added that “the United States is threatening the DPRK with the largest nuclear arsenal in the world” and therefore “the DPRK has the legitimate sovereign right to self-defence deterrent.”
Sin said the DPRK intends to hold “wide range discussions with the United States, including those of easing tension on the Korean Peninsula and replacing current armistice agreement with peace regime on the Korean Peninsula” as well as “the matters of the world without nuclear weapons the United States has already proposed.”
He stressed that “denuclearization should not be unilateral, it should not be confined only the Korean Peninsula on the northern part” but instead should include the “entire Korean Peninsula, including South Korea.”
He added that “all threats and blackmails from the United States with nuclear weapons against us completely come to an end.”
Continuing his visit to China, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday stressed the importance of creating the adequate conditions to resume dialogue between parties in the Korean Peninsula and rid the region of nuclear weapons.
