4. SOUNDBITE (French) Elizabeth Byrs, Spokesperson, World Food Programme (WFP):
"The World Food Programme is concerned about renewed population displacement and insecurity in Darfur. Violence has caused 250,000 people to flee their villages in the last five months. The Darfur conflict has been going on for the past ten years and this renewed violence is threatening an already fragile situation as well as the resilience and food security of the population."

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Elizabeth Byrs, Spokesperson, World Food Programme (WFP):
"It's a matter of providing food to four million, exactly 3.9 million people who need food assistance. WFP is currently helping 2.9 million people. The cost of this operation is enormous, 397 million dollars for the year, and we're 217 million dollars short. With the new displacements, which have been taken into consideration in this appeal for funds, we urgently need this money. It is extremely important and urgent for us to have this sum."

Storyline

The World Food Programme says new violence in Sudan's Darfur region has prompted more than 250,000 people to flee their villages since the start of the year.

At a news conference today (23 July) at the united Nations (UN) in Geneva World Food Programme spokeswoman, Elizabeth Byrs said the violence was threatening the fragile food security situation in a region plagued by ten years of conflict.

The UN agency is helping 2.9 of the 3.9 million people in the region who depend on food assistance.

Byrs explained the operation cost 397 million dollars a year, and WFP needed 217 million of this sum.

The new displacement has heightened the vital needs for the money she stressed. The escalation of violence has not only created greater needs, but hindered the UN agency's ability to reach all those affected by the conflict, because of insecurity.
