South Sudan’s former vice president Riek Machar has called for calm following his dismissal from government.
Speaking to the media at his house in Juba, on Friday 26th July, he also said he was ready to offer his expertise if called upon to help resolve various issues the country has been facing including negotiations on a continued oil flow with the country’s former foe, Sudan.
On July 23, President Salva Kiir issued a presidential decree removing his vice president, 29 national ministers and their deputies from office with immediate effect.
A decree was also issued suspending the Secretary General of the SPLM party who is also the lead negotiator of talks between Sudan and South Sudan, Pagan Amum. Since their removal, there has not been any public response from Riek Machar or Pagan Amum.
Riek Machar remains the deputy chairperson of the SPLM.
As you earlier listened to former vice president calling for calm and asking the army not to get involved with the political change, he also asked President Kiir to make a quick replacement to fill in the vacant positions to prevent a vacuum in the state.
Speaking at a separate press conference government Secretary General Abdul Agau Jok said President Salva Kiir is likely to announce a new cabinet soon. The Secretary General of Government said the president is consulting in order to achieve gender equity, a balanced representation, a quality and efficient new cabinet.
The new cabinet will be composed of 19 ministers
