Storyline

Commenting on a new report by Yale University that contends UN peacekeepers were responsible for the 2010 outbreak of cholera in Haiti, spokesperson Martin Nesirky said “they were aware of the report” and that while the “claims are not receivable” this decision would not “diminish” the commitment of the UN to do “all that the organization can do to help the people of Haiti to overcome the cholera epidemic.”

On Tuesday, the Haitian government and the United Nations (UN) launched a revised humanitarian action plan for this year asking for one hundred million US dollars to help Haitian people in need of assistance in the country.

At a briefing today at UN headquarters, Nesirky told journalists that the financial aid would help in covering the immediate needs for the rest of the year for the 935,500 people who had not yet received assistance and are at risk of cholera.

He said that the revised humanitarian action plan is underlining the cholera response as a "key priority" and its earmarked for (USD)40 million for critical cholera needs.

Only (USD) 8.7 million had been mobilized so far according to the spokesperson and that is a particular concern during the upcoming hurricane season as funding was not enough to meet potential needs.

Meanwhile on the ground, strenuous efforts are being made by the Haitian government and by UN humanitarian partners to help prepare for this year's hurricane season and the potential for further cholera cases.
