Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived today (22 August) in Seoul, South Korea.
Upon arrival he visited Namdaemun (also known as Sungnyemun or Gate of Exalted Ceremonies), one of the historical gates to the once-walled city of Seoul and designated National Monument No. 1.
The gate has considerable symbolic value to Koreans and was badly damaged in a fire in 2008. It has since been restored, opening earlier this year.
On Friday, Ban will meet with the Korean President, Park Geun-hye, as well as the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On the same day, the Secretary-General will also engage with the diplomatic corps based in Seoul on the Millennium Development Goals and attend an event hosted by the UN Academic Impact.
The Secretary-General will next travel to the Netherlands and Austria.
Meanwhile, Ban has expressed hope that the Syrian Government will give its consent so that a probe can be carried out to investigate reports of alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria’s Damascus suburbs on Wednesday, as a United Nations team continues to investigate the matter in other parts of the war-torn country.
