With Syria’s war well into its third year, the number of Syrian children forced to flee their homeland as refugees has now reached one million.
According UNICEF and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), children make up half of all refugees from the Syrian conflict. The latest figures show that some 740,000 Syrian child refugees are under the age of 11.
Aya is an eight-year-old girl who fled Syria together with her father and seven siblings. They all live together in a makeshift tent in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. She has not been to school for two years and has little prospect of going soon, still she plans for her future.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Aya, Syrian refugee:
“I want to be a pediatrician. Any children can come to me without money, I will not ask them money or anything else. I will write them a prescription and give them medicines. I will also give them an injection.”
UNICEF ensures that children have access to schooling. More than 118,000 children have been able to maintain their education inside and out of formal schools.
Meanwhile, Syrian children all around the region are coping with the memories of their school and friends back home.

UNICEF and UNHCR say that more remains to be done. The Syria Regional Refugee Response plan, which called for (USD)$3 billion dollars to address the acute needs of refugees until December of this year is currently only 38 per cent funded.
