Storyline

At their opening trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague today (10 Sept), William Samoei Ruto and Joshua Arap Sang pleaded not guilty to charges of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Kenya during the 2007-2008 post-election violence.

Ruto, the deputy president of Kenya and Sang, a former radio broadcaster, are accused of orchestrating violence following the 2007 presidential election in Kenya that left over 1,100 people dead and drove some 660,000 from their homes. After their candidate lost, they allegedly directed gangs from their own Kalenjin ethnicity to attack members of the Kikuyu tribe, who mostly backed the winning PNU (Party of National Unity).

Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told judges that it was "difficult to imagine the suffering or the terror of the men, women and children who were burned alive, hacked to death or chased from their homes by armed youths."

She also described the violence against the PNU supporters as “carefully planned, coordinated and executed campaign.”

On witness tampering and intimidation, the Prosecutor stressed to the judges that the trial must be allowed to "run its course without interference, with the activities of witnesses of either the prosecution or the defence.”

Meanwhile Ruto's lawyer, Karim Khan, asked the Court how “somebody innocent” had ended up before the court “to answer charges that will be shown to be patently false.”

Kenya’s Deputy President Ruto and Radio DJ Sang are accused of murder, deportation or forcible transfer of population and persecution. The trial is expected to take several months.

Last week Kenya’s parliament passed a symbolic vote to withdraw from the ICC, a move that would have no effect on the current trial.
