“We are using ten excavators and other vehicles and we brought fifteen ton dump trucks and we are committing around fifty personnel, the number of people and equipment will be increasing. The aim of this work is to stop the flood so we are making dyke on the southern side and that will stop the flooding from expanding to the northern side.”

Storyline

The continuing rise in the River Nile's water level in town capital city of Jonglei state, has destroyed hundreds of houses and displaced over five thousands of people.

The river, which broke its banks on Tuesday, has risen more than 1.5 meters deluging areas of the city.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nhial Majak Nhial, Mayor of Bor:
“Actually now over five thousands families are displaced. As soon as the water … because the water pass here through the tunnel, so many people are displaced here and the western part of the town is displaced.”

Displaced people have put a temporary shelter along the main road.

Peacekeepers from South Korean Military Engineers serving with the United Nation Mission in South Sudan have been involved in attempts to keep the rain waters away.

Nhial Majak Nhial – Mayor of Bor said that he has received tremendous help and support from UNMISS Korean Engineering Unit for their immediate respond in assisting the locals in constructing a new dikes adjacent to the river Nile to prevent more flooding.

The Mayor added that so far there is no humanitarian assistance has reached Bor and he called on all the steak holders to respond immediately to help the displaced.

The heavy rains had displaced hundreds of people from their homes, with over 1000 families being affected in the area, and more than 400 houses destroyed in some areas of Bor town after the river burst its banks.

A ministerial committee appointed to assess damage caused by flooding across the country has highlighted that close to 100,000 people have been affected by the recent floods.

The team headed by cabinet affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro said the displaced are in the six States of Warrap, Unity, Western Bhar el- Ghazal, Northern Bhar el-Ghazal, Jonglei and Upper Nile.
