“This crisis affects men, women and communities and economies and government. Failure to reach all of the refugees will result in considerable pressure on already strained host communities and will acerbate tensions across the region.

The head of the UN refugee agency appealed for the international community to do more to share the burden on Syria's neighbours, warning that the immense number of Syrian refugees fleeing the war is threatening those countries' social and economic fabric.

By the end of last week, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt had hosted more than 2.1 million registered Syrian refugees: more than 760,000 in Lebanon, 525,000 in Jordan, 490,000 in Turkey, 190,000 in Iraq and over 125,000 in Egypt. In addition, there are hundreds of thousands more who did not register or were already living in these countries as economic migrants.

Neighbouring countries have shown great generosity but the strain on economies, on infrastructures is acute.

The Lebanese Minister of Social Affairs pointed to the fragility of Lebanon and the need for support.

With almost half the refugee population now made up of children 1 million refugee children there was a dire warning from UNICEF.

The WFP provides food for over 1.5 million refugees, but thousands of communities inside Syrian remain isolated and in desperate need.

The conference continues through Tuesday. The aim is to produce a comprehensive long-term approach to the crisis that will provide development support for the neighboring countries immediately and for years to come.
