4. SOUNDBITE (English) Achim Steiner: UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director:
“And it is a conversation that is no longer relying on the traditional notion that it is in the North that the pathways for development are invented and in the South they are followed. Indeed what you will see here in the exhibition and in the different examples is indeed what is happening in the world today. New development paradigms, new development options are being invested everyday, we have discovered across the globe in the Southern part this globe also, some of the most far reaching and pioneering innovations. This is not a conversation about North and South, it is not a conversation about environment or social or economic dimensions of development anymore, it is anew conversation and it is through this South-South Development expo that we wish to profile the leadership and the boldness that is emerging across countries in the world, but also right here in Kenya, in Tanzania, in Uganda, in Ethiopia, in South Africa and you can go and start looking at green economy strategies emerging in all continents.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jan Eliasson, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General:
“In today’s world with finite resources, with environmental degradation, climate change, we need to make sure that we have a unified, a focused and comprehensive strategy which includes both public education as sustainability, and I would think it is necessary for the road ahead that we have that unity. That unity will occur in the United Nations only if the majority, I would say a great majority of the states in the South, will embrace this belief that yes, public education and sustainability as one if that is the case then I think we would take a very important step forward to save the process ahead, and even if I may add we could might even be taking a step forward to save the planet. I say often there might be a plan b in life but there is no planet b and that realization that we have no planet b has to sink in and has to sink in universally. Al over the world.”

Storyline

Hundreds of high-level delegates from 150 countries and across the United Nations (UN) system gathered at the headquarters of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) in Nairobi today (28 Oct.) to tackle development challenges by harnessing and exchanging innovative solutions developed in the global South.
South-South cooperation is the exchange of resources, technology and knowledge between developing countries. Today, over US$5 trillion in reserves are held by countries of the global South, which now also account for 47 per cent of global trade.
This unparalleled economic development opportunity could be one of the main engines of growth in the years ahead.
Organized by the UN Office of South-South Cooperation and hosted by UNEP under the theme “Building inclusive green economies,” the Global South-South Development Expo is the world’s biggest stage for development solutions created in the South for the South.
UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner began the conversation at the Expo’s opening ceremony today. He said that “This is not a conversation about North and South, it is not a conversation about environment or social or economic dimensions of development anymore, it is a new conversation and it is through this South-South Development expo that we wish to profile the leadership and the boldness that is emerging across countries in the world, but also right here in Kenya, in Tanzania, in Uganda, in Ethiopia, in South Africa and you can go and start looking at green economy strategies emerging in all continents.”

Events featured throughout the Expo’s first day included a ribbon cutting to inaugurate the Expo’s exhibition pavilion— a unique space housing over 70 individual exhibitors in interactive booths.
Among other high-level participants was United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson. While noting that “unity” was necessary for the road ahead he said “that unity will occur in the United Nations only if the majority, I would say a great majority of the states in the South, will embrace this belief that yes, public education and sustainability as one if that is the case then I think we would take a very important step forward to save the process ahead, and even if I may add we could might even be taking a step forward to save the planet.”
