“Today we are going to distribute to you toys sent from kids just like you who live in the U.K. They like you very much and they know that you don’t have any toys of your own, so they have sent you some really great stuff.”

“We did not have any toys and now we have a lot of great ones for me and all my friends to play with.”

”When we came to Za'atari we did not have any toys. But when we came to this kindergarten we heard that kids from the U.K sent us toys. It made us very happy.”

“For kids who have lost the toys in their homes, getting toys now gives them back part of the security that they used to feel back in Syria. Most of these kids used to have their own toys, but in Za’atari they don’t have any. And this makes them feel like they are missing something. So when they come here, they can get some of that back. ”

“These toys came from the UK. So kids around Europe can collect toys and send them to the Syrian refugee here in Jordan it gives them a better understanding that the refugee children not only from Syria but around the world have difficulties and they understand their plight and they are helping in some way.”

The United Kingdom’s Pitt Rivers Museum and the UK Scouts and Guides Fellowship collected toys from British school children to send to Syrian refugee children, as part of the their global partnership with UNHCR.
The most recent shipment was distributed on Monday (23 December) and consisted of five boxes of toys that weighed more than 800 kilos.
The toys, gifts from British children to Syrian refugee children, were collected in the UK and flown to Za’atari Camp in Jordan.

“Today we are going to distribute to you toys sent from kids just like you who live in the U.K. They like you very much and they know that you don’t have any toys of your own, so they have sent you some really great stuff.”
The collection of toys and games was impressive. Some British children attached personal notes for the Syrian kids.
For five year-old Mohamed, it was a moment a joy.

For little Doaa it was quite a surprise.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Doaa, Syrian Refugee Girl:

Over a million children make up more than half the refugees created by the current crisis.
Many have been witnesses to the worse of war. A moment of happiness, even if it is brief, is very much welcomed.

This project also helps increase the awareness about the plight of Syrian children.

UNHCR and its partners hope to expand the project to reach out to other Syrian refugee children across the region.
