“We live in a time of almost limitless possibility. As never before, we have the tools to eradicate poverty, improve social and economic well-being and lay the foundations for a sustainable future. But, at the same time, the stakes have never been higher. Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, inequality is growing and the underlying causes of conflict are prevalent in too many countries. Only by working in common cause can we avert risk and embrace opportunity.”

“Capitalism, imperialism, powerful nations; if they are your ally, they will never allow you to develop. They will never want that, this is my experience. When we freed ourselves from these economic policies, we freed ourselves from all the political impositions coming from the embassies, and the economic and social situation in Bolivia changed.”

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (8 January) urged the bloc of developing countries known as the Group of 77 and China to work collectively towards reaching the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the 2015 deadline.
Ban, at a ceremony at UN Headquarters where Fiji handed over the chairmanship of the Group to Bolivia, noted the importance of the forum’s members working together with the available tools to eradicate poverty, improve social and economic well-being and lay the foundations for a sustainable future.
He said “we live in a time of almost limitless possibility” but also noted that this is a time when the stakes have never been higher.
He stressed the importance of cooperation and said that “only by working in common cause can we avert risk and embrace opportunity.”
Bolivian President Evo Morales said the G77 “is one of the main agents of change” for reaching the MDGs, highlighting the importance of the role being played by the southern economies.
At the event, Fiji’s Foreign Minister RatuInoke Kubuabola ceremonially handed over the chairmanship to Morales, who earlier met with the Secretary General.
At a later press conference, the Bolivian President criticized the role of the International Monetary Fund and the influence exerted by the most powerful economies.
He said that “if they are your ally, they will never allow you to develop. They will never want that, this is my experience.”
Morales said that once the Bolivian Government decided to implement its own economic policies, “we freed ourselves from all the political impositions coming from the embassies, and the economic and social situation in Bolivia changed.”
The Group of 77 and China, established in 1964 by 77 States, now includes more than 130 countries, some two-thirds of the UN membership, and over 60 per cent of the world’s population.
