Storyline

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the Olympic village and took part in the torch relay in Sochi on Thursday, a day before the opening ceremony.

During the event, he said “The Olympic Charter, the United Nations Charter, we share common ideals and views, working for peace and harmony, mutual respect, development and peace.”

Ban received the flame from International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach and then passed it on to a Russian teenager.

Friday is the final day of the 65,000 kilometre journey at the Olympic Stadium, where the cauldron will be lit by the torch that was taken into space last November.

Earlier, he toured the Olympic village and greeted athletes.

The Sochi Olympics run through February 23.
