“We all agree that the most important thing is to stop the war and it is clear that there is no military solution for this war, it is clear that nobody is winning and that everybody is losing both in Syria and outside Syria and what I believe is absolutely essential is that those countries that have leverage in relation to the Syrian parties, because the war would stop now is arms and money will not to be provided to both sides.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English), António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“Countries should keep their borders open, countries should facilitate the entrance of Syrian, with visas with other kids of policies, countries should offer more resettlement opportunities to Syrians and countries should show that Jordan, Lebanon and other neighbors will not be left alone and that they are ready to share the burden, they are ready to participate in what is an international community’s responsibility to protect the Syrians fleeing this horrible conflict.”

The heads of UNICEF and UNHCR as well as senior representatives of Mercy Corps, Save the Children and World Vision International came together in Lebanon, to draw attention to the harrowing impact of over three years of conflict on 5.5 million Syrian children living in Syria and as refugees in neighboring countries.
The three-year old conflict has devastated the lives of millions, particularly children and young people.
António Guterres- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that the imperative is to stop the war. He called upon the governments of the countries that have “leverage in relation to the Syrian parties” to act because “the war would stop now is arms and money will not to be provided to both sides.”
The five organizations appealed for an end to the fighting. They called for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution granting unrestricted access across Syria for impartial humanitarian organizations.
They also asked for an intensified effort to decrease the economic impact of the crisis on host countries notably Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Turkey.
Gterres also called upon all the countries to keep their borders open to Syrians and to show that “Jordan, Lebanon and other neighbors will not be left alone and that they are ready to share the burden, they are ready to participate in what is an international community’s responsibility to protect the Syrians fleeing this horrible conflict.”
1.2 million children are now living as refugees in host countries, almost half a million in Lebanon alone. 37,000 refugee children were born since the conflict began.
This conflict has become the world’s leading cause of forced displacement, with over nine million of Syrians uprooted from their homes.
