“I am so grateful to be partnering with UNDP. I look to you all for guidance and leadership, so that I may then guide and lead for you. I know there are so many people right here in the US and also around the world who feel the way I have felt, who want to help but don’t know where to begin. I hope to work with those people so that we may all learn how to be more effective as well as with policymakers around the world who want to better care for the human rights of all of their citizens. These are complex issues indeed. There are more than one billion people in the world living in extreme poverty. Women in the world perform 66 percent of the world’s work, produce 50 percent of the food, but earn only 10 percent of the income, and own only 1percent of the property. The UNDP intends to fight poverty, inequality, and exclusion at its root, where it starts. And so do I.”

Storyline

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today (2 April) appointed American actress Connie Britton as its newest Goodwill Ambassador, with a special focus on poverty eradication and women’s empowerment.

Presented by UNDP Director for External Relations Michael O’Neill, Britton said she was “grateful to be partnering with UNDP.”

The new Goodwill Ambassador pointed out that “there are more than one billion people in the world living in extreme poverty. Women in the world perform 66 percent of the world’s work, produce 50 percent of the food, but earn only 10 percent of the income, and own only 1percent of the property.”

She said “UNDP intends to fight poverty, inequality, and exclusion at its root, where it starts. And so do I.”

The four-time Emmy-nominated actress is currently starring in the ABC series “Nashville”, which also garnered her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress - Television Drama Series.

Best-known for her role as Tami Taylor in “Friday Night Lights”, she also recently starred as Vivien Harmon on “American Horror Story.” She will appear later this year in the comedy feature “This Is Where I Leave You.”

She is joining a roster of nine other UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors: five footballers, Ronaldo de Lima, Zinédine Zidane, Didier Drogba, Iker Casillas and the world’s number one female football player, Marta Vieira da Silva; tennis player Maria Sharapova; Spanish performer Antonio Banderas; Japanese actress Misako Konno; and HRH Haakon Crown Prince of Norway.
