For over 400 years, more than 15 million men, women and children were the victims of the tragic transatlantic slave trade, one of the darkest chapters in human history. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, with support from the UN Department of Public Information’s Remember Slavery Programme, and Member States from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the African Union launched an international design competition to select an architectural symbol for its Permanent Memorial for display at UN Headquarters.
