Storyline

Twenty-five refugees evacuated from Libya arrived early Tuesday (19 Dec) in France, after transiting through Niger in an emergency humanitarian operation coordinated by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The group, which includes women and children, left Libya last month, in a evacuation organized for the most vulnerable refugees in the north African country. Images of arrivals at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport.

The refugees were until their departure from Libya held in detention facilities. Since their arrival in Niger on November 11, the group has received care and psychosocial support from UNHCR and partners. In France, they will be housed in a reception centre in the eastern region of Alsace for several months, and receive language and integration classes as well as additional support.

Their evacuation was the first in a complex operation organised by UNHCR as part of a broader effort to address the movement of migrants and refugees along the Mediterranean routes.

UNHCR has appealed for an additional 1,300 resettlement places to evacuate vulnerable refugees from Libya as many are detained in deplorable conditions for indefinite periods of time, victims of serious violations of human rights. There are nearly 550,000 persons of concern to UNHCR in Libya, including 200,000 internally displaced people and 44,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers.
