Storyline

During his visit to Somalia, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi visited a new settlement in the southern port city of Kismayo, built for refugees who have returned to the country.

There are currently more than 2 million people displaced in Somalia, both inside the country and in exile. The High Commissioner called for the international community, including development organizations and the private sector to work together to support the Somali government’s efforts to restore and rebuild the country.

The new settlement in Kismayo includes houses for 300 families, a new hospital, a marketplace and a new school.

The High Commissioner spoke with some of the students, most have returned from refugee camps in Kenya.

24-year-old Farah Hassan Abdi returned from Ali Addeh camp in Djibouti one year ago. He and his entire family of 10 will move into one of the first houses built for returnees.

But Farah and the other more 100,000 refugees who have returned to Somalia still face many challenges.

The High Commissioner acknowledged that despite progress, Somalia still faces insecurity, drought and a lack of basic services like water, food, healthcare and education.
