United Nations (UN) spokesperson said today that the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is “disturbed by reports” of the killing of six people during protests taking place on Sunday in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Six people were killed Sunday (21 Jan) and 63 people injured in protests against the president Joseph Kabila throughout the country.

Briefing reporters Monday (22 Jan) in New York, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General said “the Secretary-General urges the Congolese security forces to exercise restraint and to uphold the Congolese people’s right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.”

The Secretary-General also called “on the Congolese political actors to work towards the full implementation of the 31 December political agreement, which remains the only viable path to the holding of elections, the peaceful transfer of power and the consolidation of stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

The Catholic Church sponsored the negotiations between the DRC government and opposition in December 2016, which culminated in a political agreement which envisioned a political transition ending with presidential election to be held by the end of 2017.
