3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, United Nations:
“In recent years, multilateralism has come under great strain. Trust in institutions and processes has been sorely tested, most recently by the uneven response to the Covid crisis. Defiance of international law and the norms that bind us is making international and regional cooperation to maintain peace and security even more difficult. In such a fraught context, it is heartening that the relationship between the United Nations and the League of Arab States remains robust.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, United Nations:
“The Arab region faces a range of urgent challenges related to peace and security, development, and climate change. But the region also possesses immense potential, particularly in its young women and men, 60 percent of whom are under 30 years old. Together, we continue to encourage Member States to engage with and invest in Arab youth. That is not only the right thing to do; it is also the sensible thing to do for the region’s future.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, United Nations:
“We are committed to meeting our common challenges – and seize the opportunities before us – in the Arab world and beyond. Together, we can achieve what neither organization could achieve on its own.”
8. Med shot, delegates, Security Council
9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General, League of Arab States (LAS):
“I’d like to reiterate the importance given by the League of Arab States to the strategic partnership with the Security Council. We are certain, and we do believe certainly, in the cooperation between our two organizations toward supporting peace and security in the middle east to transform this region from a region of crises and conflicts to a region of security and stability, whose people enjoy what they deserve of peace, prosperity, and welfare.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, United Arab Emirates:

Storyline

UN political chief Rosemary DiCarlo said, “It is heartening that the relationship between the United Nations and the League of Arab States remains robust.”

Speaking today (8 Jun) at a Security Council meeting on cooperation between the United Nations and the Arab League (LAS), Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, noted, “The Arab region faces a range of urgent challenges related to peace and security, development, and climate change. But the region also possesses immense potential, particularly in its young women and men, 60 percent of whom are under 30 years old.”

She continued, “Together, we continue to encourage Member States to engage with and invest in Arab youth. That is not only the right thing to do; it is also the sensible thing to do for the region’s future.”

She also commended the League of Arab States, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and other partners, for their efforts to support peace in Sudan.

She said that coordinating various efforts is essential to maximize the impact in support of the Sudanese people and that the region’s role will be key to ending the conflict.

DiCarlo also commended the League’s support for ongoing UN efforts to find a political solution for Libya.

She also mentioned that next year, the sixteenth United Nations – League of Arab States General Cooperation Meeting would take place to review the biennial framework, take stock of accomplishments and open new avenues for cooperation.

The meeting will bring together all the two systems' departments, agencies, funds, and programmes, acknowledging the significance of the peace-humanitarian-development nexus.

The Under-Secretary-General concluded, “We are committed to meeting our common challenges – and seize the opportunities before us – in the Arab world and beyond. Together, we can achieve what neither organization could achieve on its own.”

Also addressing the Council, LAS Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit reiterated the importance given by the League of Arab States to the strategic partnership with the Security Council.

He said, “We are certain, and we do believe certainly, in the cooperation between our two organizations toward supporting peace and security in the middle east to transform this region from a region of crises and conflicts to a region of security and stability, whose people enjoy what they deserve of peace, prosperity, and welfare.”

Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State at the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, stated, “The Arab region has witnessed a rise in diplomatic and political activities aimed at overcoming conflict, settling differences, and embarking on a new era of stability and prosperity.”

According to the UAE Minister of State, Arab countries are moving towards greater unity and integration throughout the region while strengthening cooperation with partners in the East and West.

He continued, “There have also been valiant efforts made towards improving relations with neighboring states in the region, as well as dedicated and ongoing mediation efforts by Arab countries across conflicts in Palestine, Yemen, Sudan, and Libya.”

He concluded, “These rapid and positive changes could potentially pave the way for significant breakthroughs in a number of conflicts by encouraging practical and realistic solutions. Therefore, we call for strengthening the institutional relationship between the United Nations and the League of Arab States to confront these shared challenges.”
