"Unfortunately the Georgian side has gone out of its way to create all sorts of noise around it, and as a result of it all there is a lot of conflicting information, and conflicting evidence, and assertions surrounding this incident; but from the outset we have been saying that what is required is a through, professional discussion, and investigation between Russian and Georgian experts."

"Clearly members of the Council are going to continue to remain curious about this incident; but it's premature to say now what is going to happen, what the role of the Council is going to be. Of course my hope is that simply things will be clarified in the course of these bilateral Russian-Georgian consultations."

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, said today that Russian authorities were looking forward "to serious, and constructive, and substantive discussions with the Georgian experts" about the alleged bombing of Georgian territory by a Russian aircraft last week.
Ambassador Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations told journalists that it would be "premature" for the council to take any kind of a stand on the matter. His comments followed closed door Security Council discussions this morning.
"Unfortunately the Georgian side has gone out of its way to create all sorts of noise around", said Churkin, adding that there was a lot of conflicting information, evidence, and assertions surrounding that incident.
The Russian representative said that a "thorough, professional discussion and investigation between Russian and Georgian experts" is now required.
Responding to role of the Security Council in this matter Churkin said "clearly members of the Council are going to continue to remain curious about this incident; but it's premature to say now what is going to happen, what the role of the Council is going to be. Of course my hope is that simply things will be clarified in the course of these bilateral Russian-Georgian consultations."
