Six months after his appointment as the Joint Special Representative of the AU-UN Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Ibrahim Gambari outlined a few of the accomplishments made by UNAMID in the troubled region of Darfur.
At a press conference held yesterday in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital city, Gambari urged the international community to remain engaged in Darfur to achieve peace and development.

Gambari added that both insurgents and government forces had prevented UNAMID from entering areas hit by a resurgence of violence over the past two months.

Gambari however highlighted the improved relationship between the Sudanese and Chadian governments since an agreement was reached in January this year. Each country accused the other of supporting armed rebel groups that cross the border to attempt to destabilize the government.

UNAMID took over the peacekeeping task in Darfur from the African Union Mission at the end of 2008.
The UNAMID chief added that the mission would complete deployment of 92 percent of its military component and 84 percent of its police component by the end of this year.
Among the achievements include the deployment of five tactical helicopters which boosted the mission’s capacity to respond to emergency situations and enhance the security of civilians and internally displaced people in Darfur.
