Storyline

A UN spokesperson said Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Sunday’s attack on two Coptic Churches in Egypt and expressed “his deep sympathies to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Egypt.”

Reading a statement on behalf of the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric told reporters today (10 April) that Guterres wished a quick recovery to those injured and hoped that the perpetrators of this “horrific terrorist act will be swiftly identified and brought to justice.”

Earlier today, Guterres spoke to Egyptian ambassador Amr Aboulatta to express his condolences and is expected to write a letter to President Al Sisi along the same lines.

Media reports indicated that at least 44 people were killed and dozens wounded in blasts targeting two Coptic Christian churches in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria. The attacks came as worshipers were attending services for Palm Sunday and were claimed by the ISIL terrorist group on social media accounts.
