Storyline

UN officials visited Monday (10 Apr) the Somali cities of Baidoa and Kismaayoto to assess the impact on people in the South West and Jubaland States which we hit hardest by the drought.

UN Humanitarian Office's Director of Operations John Ging said there were some 150,000 newly displaced people in Baidoa alone due to the drought. Along with UN humanitarian coordination for Somalia, Peter de Clercq, and other humanitarian organizations’ representatives, Ging met with Somali officials. Peter de Clercq said the meetings revolved around cooperation “towards fighting the drought and to prevent a famine from happening, so as to enable the people get the type of assistance they deserve.”

The delegation also met with internally displaced people in two camps and patients being treated for various drought related illnesses.

In Baidoa, the delegation met many recovering patients including Habiba Ahmed who talked about her mother’s plight. She said her mother was suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting but her health was improving.
At Kismaayo General Hospital the delegation heard from Barwaqo Mohamed Ali about how she fell ill while caring for a child.

Some 6.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Somalia, with over 700,000 in Jubaland State. Many of those people were displaced and found shelter in Kismaayo.
