In September 2015, the Mayor of Batalha, a small town in central Portugal, decided it was time that his community to help refugee families. He called together the local factories, the head of education and healthcare for the municipality and proposed that their town take in 2 families.
He knew that, in order for resettlement to be successful, it would have to be a community effort. Six months later, a Palestinian-Iraqi family was informed they would be resettled there.

Grandmother Taqia never misses her exercise classes.
The children are at school.
All three men have jobs at the local ceramic factory.

Every week, a volunteer teacher comes to their home to teach them Portuguese.
