“Primarily we will be here to improve the security on the physical infrastructure of those bases, so it could include accommodation; it could include security fencing, watchtowers, roads, drainage; some projects in particular we are looking at is to improve the helicopter landing sites at both Malakaal and Bentiu, and also there are improvements we think we can make to the jetty in Malakaal which is clearly a crucial way of getting supplies for Malakaal for all of the departments within the UN and for some of the humanitarians as well.”

Storyline

Thirty-five British troops arrived the South Sudan's capital Juba today to join their country’s engineering contingent of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. (UNMISS).

Contingent commander Lt. Colonel Jason Ainley said more personnel were expected to arrive soon and hoped the contingent would be at full strength by the end of this month with approximately 400 personnel.

The British troops join UNMISS to provide engineering and medical support to the mission. They will be working on projects to improve the infrastructure at bases in Malakaal and Bentiu and also install a level two hospital in Bentiu.

Ainley said the contingent is looking to improve the helicopter landing sites at both Malakaal and Bentiu, and improve the jetty in Malakaal “which is clearly a crucial way of getting supplies for Malakaal for all of the departments within the UN and for some of the humanitarians as well.”

With almost 400 troops in total, this will be one of the United Kingdom’s largest operational deployments across the world. The troops which have already arrived will leave for Malakaal tomorrow afternoon.
