“The camp of the UN Mission in Mali in Timbuktu was attacked. Preliminary reports indicate that 6 shells landed in the camp. One peacekeeper from Liberia was killed and 9 were wounded. 8 of them were evacuated to Bamako. Peacekeepers have reinforced the camp’s protection and deployed aerial reconnaissance assets to identify the zone from which the shots were fired. The UN Mission condemns the attack in the strongest terms and calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.”

Storyline

A United Nations spokesperson told reporters today (4 May) in New York that one peacekeeper was killed and nine were wounded in an attack on a UN camp in Timbuktu, Mali on Wednesday.

Eight wounded peacekeepers were evacuated to the country’s capital Bamako. Preliminary reports indicate that 6 shells landed in the camp.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General also said that “peacekeepers have reinforced the camp’s protection and deployed aerial reconnaissance assets to identify the zone from which the shots were fired.”

Dujarric said “the UN Mission condemns the attack in the strongest terms and calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.”
