8. SOUNDBITE (English) Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, India:

So I personally believe that its incumbent on all of us to ensure that there is no child left in this world who doesn’t have access to affordable and sustainable electricity.”

But I’m here to tell you that we are not on track. The global tracking framework that tracks the globes progress towards SDG7 makes it very clear. We will need to have a step change in the rate of electrification, a massive change of heart around the issue of access to clean cooking for people around the world, in order to meet our goals.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Li Yong, Director General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO):
“This year’s forum is taking place at a very opportune time. In the second year after the adoption of 2030 development agenda and Paris agreement, the discussion today will therefore focus on the linkages between energy, climate development, as well as the synergies between the Sustainable Development Goals. Enhancing access to affordable, reliable and clean energy is a key to stimulate economic growth and ensure energy security. At the same time it is critical to accelerate clean energy innovation as an indispensable part on the effective, long term, global response to our shared climate change.”

Storyline

Speaking at the Vienna Energy Forum, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed said countries must “act quickly and decisively” to fulfil the Paris Agreement goals and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because the “window of opportunity is closing.”

Participants from around the world and all sectors of society came together at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna today (11 May) to discuss key issues of the energy debate. This year’s focus was achieving sustainable energy for the implementation of the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement, which aimed to limit the global temperature increase to “well below” two degrees.

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) said India is leading the way in terms of sustainable energy, with solar power now costing less than coal thanks to several government initiatives which has seen the cost of solar panels drop by 85 percent. Indian Energy Minister Piyush Goyal said the lives of families in remote areas in his country were “transformed once electricity reaches the villages.” He stressed that it was “incumbent on all of us to ensure that there is no child left in this world who doesn’t have access to affordable and sustainable electricity.”

Sustainable Energy for All CEO Rachel Kyte warned that the world was still far from reaching its energy goals. She said the world would need to have “a step change in the rate of electrification, a massive change of heart around the issue of access to clean cooking for people around the world” to reach those goals.

UNIDO Director General Li Yong said the Forum was taking place “at a very opportune time.” He said the discussion would focus “on the linkages between energy, climate development, as well as the synergies” between the SGDs. He noted that enhancing access to affordable, reliable and clean energy is “a key to stimulate economic growth and ensure energy security” adding that it was also “critical to accelerate clean energy innovation as an indispensable part on the effective, long term, global response to our shared climate change.”
