The sixth round of intra-Syrian talks to reach a peaceful settlement to the conflict in the country began today (16 May) in Geneva.
UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura held bilateral meetings with Government and opposition delegations in what he said on Monday would be more interactive, proactive, and more frequent meetings and have a more business-like structure. The talks, as in the past, will be held in proximity with de Mistura and his team acting as a mediator among the parties to the talks.
The four main issues, also called “four baskets”, to be discussed in this new round of intra-Syrian talks haven’t changed: political transition, free and fair elections, a new constitution and counter-terrorism measures.
