Central African President Faustin Archange Touadera visited the town of Paoua on Friday which has recently been plagued by violence.
Paoua has witnessed fighting fighting between the Revolution and Justice (RJ) armed group, responding to the authority of Armel Ningatoloum Sayo, and the National Movement for the Liberation of Central Africa under the command of Mahamat Bahar since last December.
Touadera was accompanied by the Head of the UN mission in the country (MINUSCA) Parfait Onanga-Anyanga. The President said he had come to “tell the armed groups that the harm they are doing to their neighbours is not normal at all.” He called on the groups to end the violence adding “It is not you who will protect the people and the country.”
MINUSCA said it is working closely with the government to investigate the facts and prosecute the perpetrators. MINUSCA chief Parfait Onanga-Anyanga said the commitments made by the President “will be fulfilled.” He said MINUSCA would “help him to ensure that this region is rid of all those who caused death and desolation in Paoua and the surrounding areas for the people to regain the tranquillity and peace they deserve."
MINUSCA said clashes between armed groups have displaced more than 60,000 people and caused a serious humanitarian crisis in the area.
