The United Nations Peacekeeping chief today (24 Jan) said that the international community will not tolerate the violation of the Cessation of Hostilities in South Sudan, urging the Security Council to “speak out very clearly against the violations” and take “decisive actions” towards the violators.

Speaking to Security Council today (24 Jan), Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations call on President Kiir to” put to an end to this impunity.”

He added “South Sudanese women and girls cannot continue to be victimized and brutalized with no justice served.”

Expressing his concern on the humanitarian situation in the country, Lacroix called on the Transitional Government of National Unity to “work towards compliance with President Kiir's directive of unfettered humanitarian access, and call on all other parties to allow humanitarians to carry out their life-saving tasks across the country.”

Festus Mogae, the Chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission condemned the recent acts of violence in the country and called upon “all the signatories to exercise the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, to disseminate the terms of the Agreement to their supported commanders, and ensure immediate and consistent compliance.”

UrsuJa Mueller, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator told the Council that she is “deeply disturbed and concerned by the continued high rates of sexual violence.”
