“Members of the Security Council urged all parties to the conflict to ensure access to humanitarian and medical personnel to patients and others in need and safe and unhindered access and also stressed the response teams must never be a target. Members of the Security Council expressed the need to continue to follow developments closely and for continued transparent reporting on all suspected and confirmed cases.”

The members of the Security Council today (28 Aug) expressed their “grave concern” about the situation in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) due to the Ebola outbreak.
Ambassador Karen Pierce of the United Kingdom, which holds the presidency of the Council for the month of August, told reporters in New York that members states were concern because “the disease could spread rapidly including to neighbouring countries, and also because of its possible implications for regional stability.”
She said that the Security Council received a briefing by the World Health Organization (WHO) director general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Leila Zerrougui.
The members of the Security Council commended efforts by the DRC government, the WHO, the UN Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), and the international community to address and contain the disease, noting the challenging operating environment.
The UK ambassador also said, “members of the Security Council urged all parties to the conflict to ensure access to humanitarian and medical personnel to patients and others in need and safe and unhindered access and also stressed the response teams must never be a target.”
The members of the Security Council also expressed the need to continue to follow developments closely and for continued transparent reporting on all suspected and confirmed cases.
